Grammar, always grammar
The foundations matter; grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary, kept in balance. Reading quietly expands your vocabulary. Combine all of these elements and the rest will follow.
About · La Maestra Jo
I'm Jo, an Australian teacher who came to Italian as an adult, fell hard and have never looked back. Here's a little of how I got here.
I'm Australian, with Scottish roots, not Italian, which means I understand exactly what it takes to learn this language from the outside in. I've been studying it for over twenty years. I'm also lucky to have married into an Italian family, so I live a life immersed in the language and its culture.
My love of Italy began as a backpacker, wandering Florence, Rome and the regions of my husband's heritage; Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia, both in the north. Later, at home in Canberra with two small boys, I began to study Italian in earnest. I haven't stopped since, partly out of passion and partly because a good teacher never stops learning.
Teaching has always been my profession, with one detour: around ten years in recruitment across various sectors, including IT. Those years turned out to be a gift; I went on to recruit much of the staff for our family's hotel and hospitality business, many of them from Italy, and many still with us today. The family business, and the Italian connection, run deep.
But Italian with Jo is where my heart is. I never tire of teaching, and I'm always chasing new ways to make learning interesting, interactive and up to date. I'll happily use AI where it makes my work more efficient, but I firmly believe the best results still come from one human teaching another. With many years of experience behind me, and very regular trips back to that beautiful country, I'd love to keep sharing what I know with you. Dai, ce la facciamo insieme.

Teaching philosophy
The foundations matter; grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary, kept in balance. Reading quietly expands your vocabulary. Combine all of these elements and the rest will follow.
Whether I am teaching children or adults, we circle back to things often, but rarely the same way. I like to combine several elements in the one class; flashcards, games, music, film and conversation.
Nothing happens by chance in my classes; they are thoughtfully curated and individually tailored. I have cultivated an extensive library of resources; textbooks, novels, poems … AI has its place, but I truly believe in the personal experience to get you the best results.
A few of my favourite things
All things Italian, naturally — and a few that are simply mine.
